On the 5th of June at 6:00 pm the Foto-Medium Art Gallery in Kraków will hold the opening of an exhibition entitled Against Seeing presenting the works of Tomasz Dobiszewski. The Artist formulates his expressions using photography, video and multimedia installations. The area of interest for the artist is time and space, limitations of the viewer’s perception, illusion and problems of participations.
The Against Seeing exhibition contains the artist’s latest works and concentrates on the problem of invisibility or unavailability of the photographic and film image. Invisible or hidden images in Dobiszewski’s works can be perceived in a non-traditional manner in which the sense of sight is of secondary importance. Knowledge of artistic representation can be gained though hearing, movement or intuition.
Tomasz Dobiszewski’s artistic explorations are accompanied by a deep knowledge of classical photography, film and digital media. In works which are evidence of artistic taming of the media he does not stop at purely conceptual cognitive strategies but enriches the discourse by non-intellectual elements such as sensual impressions or intuitive cognition. He connects messages readable for different human senses (sound and image) and by experimenting with the physiognomy of seeing or hearing; on the one hand aims at fuller, more complete transfer, on the other mischievously or ironically deprives viewers of the possibility to get to know the essence of the work.
Installations from the Hidden Trips cycle (2006-2009) document journeys which the artist took recently and despite being made with the most popular photographic technology they remain not visible but … audible. They also commemorate performative creation. Whereas photograph entitled Movemental (2009) were taken basing on destruction of the concept of contemporary and old interiors. Scattered shapes and space visible there, different from full forms of objects, remain recognisable due to the viewers’ basic habits and knowledge in the field of perception of reality and space.
Short video presentations entitled Timing (2008/2009) are film registrations of banal actions with characteristic computer function ascribed to them which analyses the progress of a petty scenario of “actors’” behaviour. Progress function displays a process deeply hidden from us as it is so obvious that we might deem it insignificant.
