On 19th July at 6 pm the Foto-Medium-Art Gallery in Krakow will host a vernissage of Natalia LL’s individual exhibition. The artist herself will participate in the opening of the exhibition – a successive one organized in the jubilee year of the thirtieth anniversary of the gallery’s opening.
The exhibited works will include the artist’s classical and well-known photographs from the Consumerart (1972) and Postconsumer Art (1975) series. Particularly worth seeing are the large-size photographs entitled Velvet Terror (1970) and Eroticism of Terror (2004), which envelop the exhibition. The display is made complete by video film shows, which span almost the entire artist’s career
Natalia LL was born in 1937 in Żywiec. During the period 1957-1963 she studied at the State College of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, and in 1970, together with Zbigniew Dłubak, Andrzej Lachowicz and Antoni Dzieduszycki she founded a gallery and a group called PERFAMO, which has become one of the most important circles of artistic photomedialism. In the mid-70s the artist joined the international feminist art movement by taking an active part in numerous symposia and exhibitions.
Her multimedia work, which covers photography, video, performance art, installations, as well as painting and drawing, is deeply rooted in the aesthetics of conceptual art and its consequent trends. Natalia LL’s works are imbued with an intuitive and at times magical atmosphere, which, perhaps due to the literary references (such as Markiz de Sade or Georges Bataille) evokes transcendence. The artist also often uses pop culture and provokes by challenging the former and present status quo. She also writes theoretic articles and reflections on art emphasizing the most significant aspects of her artistic attitude.
The multiple directions of Natalia LL’s artistic work over the last three decades have been frequently analyzed and have become part of the history of contemporary art.
Her works have been displayed at important exhibitions in Poland and around the world (e.g. IX Biennale de Paris, 1975, XV Biennale Internationale Arte San Paulo, 1979, Erotik in der Kunst, Kunstverein München, 1982, La Photographie Polonaise, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, 1982, Europa-Europa, Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle Bonn, 1994, Natalia LL – Ogrody Personalizmu, Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw, 1998, Podsumowania, Galeria Bielska BWA, 2004).
The exhibition will be open to public until 29 August 2007.
