Until do Us Part

On the 27th November (Friday), at 6 p.m. the Kraków Foto-Medium-Art Gallery is hosting the opening of exhibition entitled Until do Us Part. It is the first impression of a multi-element research and exhibition project which approaches the issue of time in artists’ work and thought. We invited seven eminent artists representing different generations and attitudes to participate in the project. Some of the artists are:

KINGA ARAYA, TOMASZ DOBISZEWSKI, WINCENTY DUNIKOWSKI-DUNIKO, NATALIA LL, RAFAŁ PIEKARZ, TIMM ULRICHS I ALICJA ŻEBROWSKA

The substance of time reaches its definite turning points and causes the creative life activity to stop, change or repeat itself conditioned by intention, coincidence or the passing of time itself. Man as an infinite being In constant motion and without final shape, is subject to constant biological and cultural transformations. In order to survive and die man faces mortality, while an artist also approaches the idea of art’s immortality. Everything is confronted with time and the hope that time continues beyond the limits of any border.

We live our lives certain that time is its immanent part. Its passing determines not only the fates of society in general and each individual person but has its impact on cultural theories and artistic actions. Exploration of this issue is part of both philosophical and religious thought. Almost every significant philosopher formulated his reflection on time. The 20th century with its explosion of relativist science and avant-garde art brought about imaginative intellectual constructs devoted to this issue. Albert Einstein proclaimed that time is a relative unit passing subjectively. Italian futurists noted its passing by documenting simultaneous phenomena. Analytical reflexion on the subject constituted numerous neo-avantgarde issues and actions of conceptual art which investigated the dependence of artistic representation on the creation’s medium.
It seems that at the beginning of the 20th century contemporary art defined with a wide selection of relativist doctrines, narrowed down to a metaphor of a changeable but ever-flowing river current became bored with the formal and analytical reflexion. For contemporary people time is not so much relative as it can be successfully understood as a cultural creation. This is why the first part of a larger project is mostly dedicated to the notion of time in the metaphorical, literary and philosophical sense. We look for fragmentary answers and illustrations of questions evoked by time in works od eminent artists. In this case we were particularly occupied by the issue of turning point, a barrier after crossing of which nothing is ever the same or is identical again.
